I am interested in converting a cap and ball revolver to use modern cartridges, like one of the pistols in your videos. Is the style without a loading gate, with multiple firing pins better than the type with a single firing pin and a loading gate?
Cap and Ball to Cartridge Conversion
This info may be a little late, but I'll put it here as an fyi.
I looked into converting my 1860 .44. All the conversion cylinders have a lead-out as well as a lead-in. I contacted kirst, as well as howell. Kirst said to make it with a lead in only would be 2k, to rewrite the cad software. Howell simply said no. So, mine stays a cap and ball forever.
The 36's have lead-ins only as far as I've seen..
Yes the Kirst/Howell lead out is a weird thing. Taylor has a lead in only but no loading gate.
All the taylors I saw for .44 had both as well.. Walt Kirst said it was so the bolt on a poorly timed gun would clear..
I just went and searched and found the same thing as well. Bummer. I see you can get a 1861 Pietta navy with no lead out but 38 cal only.
